Rhiannon
It is the time of year for Work Placements in the studio. Last week we had the honour of meeting and having Rhiannon from Noel Baker Community School in our studio.
![]() Rhiannon chose to use her week with us to learn Monoprinting, her careful and intricate drawing style lend itself perfectly to this technqiue and during her stay she produced a number of beautifully considered prints. You can view Rhiannon's work placement portfolio here. If you would like to learn more about our Work Placement Programme, please click here.
Night Roses
![]() A solo exhibition by Tony Hall Showing: Fri 17 June - Fri 12 August 2011 Derby Cathedral Coffee House Night Roses is a small exhibition of drypoint prints; each print depicts one, two or more roses, drawn from life. The images are drawn with a metal point onto a copper plate which is then inked and printed on an etching press. Each image was drawn in a single session, most taking around three hours. The reflectiveness of the plate surface makes it difficult to see the marks as the drawing progresses, so that the success or failure of what has been done is not apparent until the image is finally printed. The prints on display are the results of hopeful attempts to grasp and transmit some trace of how one rose, or a bunch of roses, appeared on a particular date, at night, in a corner of a room, as time and gravity did their work. The exhibition was selected from a group of around twenty images produced in April and May 2011 and printed at, and with thanks to, Green Door Printmaking Studio. ![]()
Gods and Monsters
We are eagerly awaiting the private view of Kevin's one-man show at the Crompton Tavern this coming Saturday.• 01 May - 25 June 2011 • Private Viewing: Sat 7th May (4pm-6pm) • Free Admission "Everything has beauty but not everyone sees it." (Confucius) "In Gods and Monsters: I explore the notion of what is beautiful. When we say something is beautiful, we are recommending to others that they should take delight in it, but they may not see what we do. Therefore, this is ultimately a very personal view of what I find aesthetically pleasing. As an artist I can only recommend. You must decide for yourself. The work also examines the question "Is beauty synonymous with perfection?" We see the classic beauty in the damaged Venus de Milo, for example. She is no longer perfect, yet imperfect, she is perfection. So beauty can be found in the imperfect. I have looked at the imperfect and fragmented and found beauty." - Kevin ![]() View more of Kevin's work
Mono Bot Duo Bot
A solo exhibition by Martin Hyde• Fri 16 April - Fri 17 June 2011 • Free Admission An exhibition by up and coming Derby artist Martin Hyde, as part of his 'The Visitors' series. The works feature characters which blur the line between human and clockwork forms which is reflected in the expressive nature of the work and the delicate translucent Chinese paper they are created on. Wildly original, with a vast array of marks and textures, and produced with experimental Monoprint techniques, the works are unlike anything you are likely to have seen before. The pieces carry Martin's trademark melancholic oddness and humor, but are unlike any of his previous exhibited works which includes: The Hair Days, Dead Good Kids, and The Visitors series. All of the works were produced at Green Door Printmaking Studio.
