Artist's Statement:
The underlying themes behind my work are the aesthetics of decay and degradation and an exploration of the effects of nature on man made objects. My work examines the changes to surfaces that result from the decaying process in it's various forms. Weather, rust, heat and the passage of time produce textures and colours, which are both transient and ephemeral yet often stunning. As nature overcomes mans best efforts we often find true beauty.
I describe myself as a Multi Media Artist/Printmaker, usually working in mixed media and textiles. Mainly producing pieces, which incorporate a variety of textile mediums and techniques Including Hand and Machine embroidery, Felt making, Silk and Hand made paper, Bonding and Layering etc. Often my work incorporates the use of found or recycled objects especially plastics and fabrics, which I transform with heat. My main area of interest is texture and the manipulation of surfaces to produce work of a 3 dimensional nature.
Over the past few years I have developed an interest in printmaking. I find that with this medium I can create more unusual, innovative and complex images than with traditional forms of mark making. I am constantly surprised and excited by the printing process. Each print block is different; you need to get to know it. The way you handle it can produce an almost endless variety of results. Sometimes the results are exactly what you predict, yet more often than not when you pull the paper away from the print block you get far more than you expected, exciting lines, pattern, an infinite range of tones and a surprising illusion of depth.
