Stippling Guttersnipe

7 November 2018 – 21 January 2019

A collection of works by illustrator and printmaker, Steven Allen, revolving around the general practice of ‘stippling’. Utilising this technique in combination with the strange and bizarre machinations of a cartoonists mind, Steven has created several works based around the use of this practice along with his peculiar and uncanny style.

Guttersnipe
noun derogatory

‘…a scruffy and badly behaved child who spends most of their time on the street.’

The use of this word, in conjunction with the technique, has a nice, aesthetic ring to it. Not only does it encompass what I would consider my drawings to be; bad, unruly  children with a rather scruffy nature to them, but also how I would describe the themes of the actual work itself. From the dubious antics of each drawings personality to how I’ve chosen to portray them, I feel that this is a good starting point to explore this quality in my work.
