Exploring the Line in Etching

This night class offers the chance to explore the line using Acrylic Resist Etching. Experimentation with hand drawn elements, this technique is ideal for beginners or those interested in learning how to etch and produce their own fine art prints. This four-week course is an opportunity to explore etching in a supportive and stimulating working studio.


What will you learn?

Etching is a means of engraving imagery and mark making into various kinds of metal plates with the purpose of printing the plates. In Western Europe, the process of etching began during the fourteenth century as a way of decorating metal (eg: armour or jewellery) and was not initially seen as a means for printing imagery.

The process of etching begins with laying a ‘ground’ or ‘resist’ on the plate, drawing into it and then placing the plate in a bath of corrosive liquid (traditionally nitric acid), which will then incise, or ‘etch’, the drawn image through the resist and on to the metal. Within this discipline, there are a multitude of different techniques, which produce different marks and effects on the surface of the plate.

This night class will cover a range of different etching processes;

Hard Ground (Line Drawing)
Line Drawing with hard ground is the basis of creating an etched plate; the fundamental teaching of using a drawn line to produce a composition. This technique incorporates the preparation of metal plate, the use of hard ground resist along with etching the line drawing through the resist, before finally cleaning and printing the plate using the intaglio method. This method can be strongly linked to those with a love for drawing and composition, as well as working meticulously and methodically.

Aquatint in etching is the means in which varied tones are applied to the surface of the plate, in order to create various tones on the print itself. These tones are achieved through a series of incrementally bitten (or etched) dots into a chosen matrix. This technique is usually a follow-on technique to Line Drawing, but can also be used as a stand-alone process for creating a tonal print from scratch.

Wet Ground Etching
This technique is the equivalent to ‘Soft Ground’ in traditional etching. A safe, alternative, wet soft ground is laid on the plate as textural articles can be passed through the press to take imprints, and/or drawings can be made (on their own/or as well) to draw out the ground, before the plate is then hardened and bitten. This method is a very loose, creative way to produce plates before finally printing them.

Open Bite Etching
This technique is one in which will give the etched plate a ‘chiselled’ or sculpted effect. This method produces varying levels within the bitten area, as in a bas relief, to produce it’s unique aesthetic look. The technique can be used in conjunction with other ways of mark making in etching (line drawing or aquatint for example) or can be highly effective on its own, in order to achieve a very tactile quality. Open Bite can be used quite freely, as it is applied with brushes, and lends itself to abstraction. After application, the plate is bitten using varying times consecutively, thus giving an etch on different levels.
