Learn how to create unique wet cyanotypes using household items to create tones and textures from found objects and photographs during this one day members only course.
What is Cyanotype?
Cyanotype is an old photographic process that makes beautiful, one-off cyan-blue print images. The Cyanotype process dates back over 160 years and was discovered by Sir John Herschell in 1842. It was the first successful non-silver photographic printing process.
Being a simple, cheap and more or less permanent technique: Cyanotype enjoyed an extended period of commercial success as the blueprint process for copying drawings and plans for industry. It was only made obsolete by the invention of dry, plain paper photocopying.
What will you learn?
Cyanotype is an old photographic process that makes beautiful, prussian blue monochromatic prints. This course will cover how to create your own wet cyanotypes from a contact acetate negative or by the making of a photogram. The wet cyanotype process is simple and addictive, by introducing various kitchen chemicals (vinegar, lemon juice, washing soda), salt, spices and natural dyes (turmeric, paprika, coffee grounds and plant material) a variety of textures, colours and tones can be produced.
Students should bring along a selection of flat found objects to try (foliage / textiles) as well as some photographic imagery to play with.
Topics covered:
- A brief introductory session into the process
- How to produce your own prints using the methods covered
