About this process

Cyanotype is an old photographic process that makes beautiful, one-off cyan-blue print images. The Cyanotype process dates back over 160 years and was discovered by Sir John Herschell in 1842. It was the first successful non-silver photographic printing process.

Being a simple, cheap and more or less permanent technique: Cyanotype enjoyed an extended period of commercial success as the blueprint process for copying drawings and plans for industry. It was only made obsolete by the invention of dry, plain paper photocopying.

This course will cover the application of chemicals to either paper or fabric and the exposure of found objects, thereafter how to develop the image.

Students should bring along a selection of found objects to make into a negative image. All materials will be supplied.
