Soap Ground & Spit Bite Etching

Short Course

soapspit

Etching is a means of engraving imagery and mark making into various kinds of metal plates with the purpose of printing the plates. This course would fully suit those with previous etching experience, artists who wish to add new techniques to their repertoire or even for those just beginning.

What will you learn?

Soap Ground

During Soap Ground, a specially mixed ground is laid loosely on a plate and either drawn into or subjected to any mark making.

The plate is then bitten in the mordant, then cleaned and printed. This then produces a very textured effect with a patchy white background, instantly recognisable as a Soap ground etching.

This method would greatly benefit beginners, etchers trying new techniques, experimental artists and those who tend to use abstraction in their work.

Spit Bite

Spit Bite is another way to bite the plate by using a different method than what is usually employed. The technique calls for the plate to be bitten by painting or dropping the mordant straight on to the chosen area.

Historically, in traditional etching, the etcher would spit on the plate to mix (which would, hypothetically, bite the image better), using a mixture of nitric acid and gum Arabic. Currently, there is still some debate whether the spit would make the acid stick to the plate or not. Naturally, at Green Door, we do not use these materials, as the nitric acid is extremely toxic and harmful to both the environment and the artist using them. The effect of this method is that of a thin wash drawing.

This method would greatly benefit beginners, etchers trying new techniques, experimental artists and those who tend to use abstraction in their work.
