Screen Printing for Beginners

This six-week course is an opportunity to explore screen printing and its many techniques in a supportive and stimulating working studio. Experimentation and combining both hand drawn elements and digitally produced design means that this technique is ideal for beginners or those interested with multiple reproduction of prints for either commercial purposes or their own artistic endeavour.

What will you learn?

A screen print (also referred to as a serigraph or silk screen) is a planographic method of printmaking using stencil techniques and is utilised for both fine art reproduction on to paper and surface textile printing. This night class offers a multitude of different inspiring and encouraging outcomes that span the classic world of fine art printmaking to commercial product design.

This night class will cover four different processes;

Monoprinting with Serigraphy
The key concept and success to this technique (in combination with the concept of the monoprint) is in its spontaneity and fluidity. Monoprints of this nature can often be used as stand-alone prints or in conjunction with other serigraphy processes, once the initial monoprint is complete.

Stencil Screen Printing
This traditional technique of screen printing is to create the stencil out of a non-porous material by hand (much like a papercut) and then applying the stencil to the mesh of the screen before producing multiple prints on to paper or fabric.

Photographic Serigraphy
Using photographic techniques to transfer images onto the screen, this technique allows exploration and investigation as a method of reproducing artwork specifically with the intent of producing an edition of fine art prints, as well as analysing composition and aesthetic design.

Textile Printing
This technique is ideal for those who wish to begin their own artistic vision, either commercially or personally, whilst offering experienced printmakers a new dynamic method in which to work.
