Work Placements

Green Door’s Student Work Placement Programme is an ongoing project that reflects our commitment to young student’s studying Art who would otherwise have no access to printmaking facilities as a medium option in preparation of their course portfolios. These students are the future of printmaking.

Each year Green Door Printmaking Studio offers a limited number of week-long work placements at its Studio in Banks Mill Studios, Derby to GCSE, BTEC and A/AS Level students on an arts-based course.

Since our start in 2007 we have accepted and taught a number of students, with ages ranging from 13 – 17 years old.

Because the environment in an open access fine art printmaking workshop is quite unlike that found in the usual office or retail placement locations, Green Door has developed a proactive approach to candidate selection that we hope ensures that those accepted are the students most likely to benefit from the experience we offer.

As part of the application process the student is asked to choose from a selection of project proposals. If called for interview the student will then have the opportunity to present their initial response to the proposal and negotiate an agreed project brief. During the work placement the student will then be required to produce print-based work to meet the brief of their assigned project.

The successful candidate will therefore be the student that can demonstrate the discipline and self-motivation to produce work of high quality during the work placement and with a serious intent to study art at a higher level. Previous experience of printmaking is, however, not essential.

"Over the past week at Green Door, I have experimented with colour and tone through screen printing and etching. These techniques have really helped with my A2 Art work and not only have I learnt a great deal abut the art of printmaking, the experience in such a calming environment was very enjoyable. As a beginner, I did not know what to expect but I can definitely say I have learnt a lot about myself. I’d recommend Green Door to any creative characters out there!"

“During my work placement at Green Door I learnt the techniques used in monoprinting and applied them to my theme of animals. I enjoy the work of Joseph Raffael and I also liked the freedom I was given at Green Door. I’d like to thank Anna, Pan & everyone at Green Door for making me feel welcome & helping me to under go my work experience.”

“Upon my arrival at Green Door Printmaking Studio I had no idea on what to expect… when I got here I had the great opportunity to experience and experiment with a variety of new and fabulous printmaking techniques. My “Flower of the Hour” prints were influenced by Tord Boontje and I feel that his art has influenced me a great deal. I have thoroughly enjoyed my time here at Green Door and would like to thank Anna and Pan for giving me this great opportunity.”

“I really enjoy art and design and have chosen to do art and textiles GCSEs! Before I started my placement, I developed a project around an artist. I chose Roy Lichtenstein as a really like his style of art. Part of my GCSE course was based on food so I designed lots of paintings and drawings in his style to be used for screen printing. During my placement I learnt a lot about screen printing using different techniques such as stencil screen printing and photographic printing and I produced lots of art work. I would love to do more screen printing in the future!”

“Over my week of work experience at Green Door I learnt the technique of monoprinting, based on the subject of animals. I made a variety of different prints and really enjoyed the whole experience. One of my best pieces, I think, was the peacock which really reflects the techniques and the sort of art that I personally enjoy (e.g. Nick Morley (See article in ‘Printmaking Today’ Summer 2011). Thank you to Anna and Pan for giving me this great opportunity and teaching me printmaking.”

“I chose to do collography whilst here and I really enjoyed it. I enjoyed making and designing the prints as I could use my own imagination and be creative. I really enjoyed it here and would recommend it to anyone. It is brilliant and I learnt so many things about papers, inking and how to soak my paper before printing.”

“I had no idea what to expect but, the outcome was so amazing. Print making is … AWESOME!! Who would have thought I was going to enjoy it. It was an experience I am so not going to forget. I got to do all sorts. Obviously I am a natural(: I had so much to show my art teacher. A lot of work and I even got a treat to design my own top. I’d like to thank Anna and Pan for making my experience so enjoyable. They made me feel welcome and now… I am hocked with print making. If I ever get spare time or a day off school, trust me I’ll be back.”
