About this process

Spit Bite is another way to bite the plate by using a different method than what is usually employed. The technique calls for the plate to be bitten by painting or dropping the mordant straight on to the chosen area.

Historically, in traditional etching, the etcher would spit on the plate to mix (which would, hypothetically, bite the image better), using a mixture of nitric acid and gum Arabic. Currently, there is still some debate whether the spit would make the acid stick to the plate or not. Naturally, at Green Door, we do not use these materials, as the nitric acid is extremely toxic and harmful to both the environment and the artist using them. The effect of this method is that of a thin wash drawing.

This method would greatly benefit intermediate etchers trying new techniques or experimental artists and those who tend to use abstraction in their work.

If you would like to discuss your project, we highly recommend that you arrange a date to come into the studio in order to discuss your course beforehand so we can learn more about your aims. To confirm your booking you will need to complete an online booking form and provide a minimum 50% (non-refundable) deposit.

These courses are available to book on an individual (one-to-one) basis, or in groups of up to 4 people. All of our tailored course prices include refreshments, materials and in-depth notes.

Concessionary Rate £135
Our concessionary rate is applicable if you are aged 60 years or older, aged 13 years or younger, and/or in receipt of any state benefits. Please note: undergraduate students are not eligible for our concessionary rate.

Student Rate £115
Our student rate is applicable if you are aged 13+ years, and in full-time education or currently studying towards an undergraduate or post-graduate degree.
